When is it time to seek individual therapy?
Often when we are struggling, suffering with depression or anxiety, we think that we have to deal with it alone. We feel confused and “don’t want to wear out our friends.” Sometimes we don’t understand the origin of our pain and feel we can’t control our feelings or behavior. Additionally, we may believe that we’re bad because we are hurting. We yell at ourselves, “Come on, get it together!” This is rarely useful as we are really just attacking ourselves, leaving us feeling worse or even paralyzed.
When we end up in this cycle of discontent, confusion, despair or self blame, we may feel there is no way out. Individual Therapy can be of help.
Sitting down with a therapist can:
-
- help us start to witness ourselves;
- interrupt these negative cycles;
- create insight and understanding through exploration of past and present issues;
- give us the ability to shift our thinking and increase our ability to problem solve; and help us find acceptance and compassion for who we are right now even as we continue to develop.
